Understanding the Difference Between One-Step and Two-Step Order Forms

This article will run through the differences between a one-step and two-step order form and cover use cases for each. While both forms let you collect contact, shipping, and payment information from leads who opt in to your product or service offering, they are structured differently. You can embed the one-step and two-step order form elements directly in funnels or websites.

Key Benefits of Using One-Step vs. Two-Step Order Forms

  • Simplified Checkout with One-Step Order Form: The one-step order form collects all information in a single form, making the checkout process quick and seamless. This is ideal for businesses looking for a fast, efficient way to process transactions without multiple steps.
  • Better Lead Retention with Two-Step Order Form: The two-step order form captures contact and shipping details in the first step and payment details in the second. This is beneficial for lead retention, as it allows you to follow up with potential customers who abandon the process after step one.
  • Increased Conversion Opportunities: With a two-step order form, even if the payment step is abandoned, you still capture valuable lead data. This information can be used for abandoned cart reminders or retargeting campaigns, increasing the chance of converting leads into customers.
  • Customizable Checkout Experience: Both forms offer customization options like cart mode, product descriptions, order bumps, and coupon codes, giving businesses flexibility to enhance the customer experience during the checkout process.

Part 1: Difference

What is a one-step order form?

A one-step order form collects contact, shipping, and payment information all in one form. When the lead presses “Complete Order,” their information is stored and payment is completed.

What is a two-step order form?

A two-step order form collects contact and shipping information in one step and then collects payment information in a second step.

The benefit of a two-step order form over a one-step order form is that with a two-step, if the contact fills out their information in step one, presses submit, then doesn’t complete step two, you have their contact information and can use it in various ways to remind them of their intent to purchase.

FAQ

1. When should I use a one-step order form versus a two-step order form?

Use a one-step order form for a simpler, faster checkout process where collecting all details at once is preferred. Use a two-step order form if you want to capture lead information early and follow up with potential customers who don’t complete their purchase.

2. Can I switch an existing one-step order form to a two-step order form?

Yes, you can change the order form element within the funnel or website builder by swapping out the one-step form for a two-step form and adjusting the settings accordingly.

3. What happens if a lead completes step one of the two-step order form but doesn’t finish step two?

The lead’s contact information is still captured after step one. You can use this data to follow up with abandoned cart reminders, offer discounts, or retarget them through marketing campaigns.

4. What is “Cart Mode” in the order form settings?

Cart Mode allows customers to add multiple products to their order before completing checkout. It’s useful when offering bundles or upsell options.

5. Can I add upsells or order bumps to both one-step and two-step order forms?

Yes, both one-step and two-step order forms support order bumps and upsells, which can be enabled through the form’s advanced settings.

6. Can I apply discount codes or coupons in both types of order forms?

Yes, you can add the option for customers to enter discount codes or coupons in both one-step and two-step order forms.

7. Is it possible to track abandoned carts with a one-step order form?

It’s more challenging to track abandoned carts with a one-step order form since all details are submitted at once. Two-step order forms are better suited for abandoned cart tracking since contact information is captured separately.
